Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs
In the period 2017-2020 were measures in place to encourage that STI is geared to help achieve SDGs?
yes
If yes, please describe
Several SDG goals were addressed in the period 2017-2020. Toward achieving gender equality and women empowerment in science RA Science Committee implemented a special Call for projects involving women researchers as team leaders/principal researchers. 15 projects have been recommended for funding with the duration of 2 years. The Call will be implemented regularly. As of the beginning of the year 2020, the share of women in science is as follows: Number of women – 1702 /48.4 % of the total number of researchers/ Number of women holding administrative positions-708 /49.9 %/ Number of women with PhD-885 /38.8%/ Number of women aged under 35- 458 /51.5 %/. The RA Science Committee implements programs that are open for all fields in Natural Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Social Sciences and the Humanities. Special attention is being paid to promoting linkages between the research community and the private sector. An important issue on Armenia’s science development agenda is the extension of international collaboration. To strengthen scientific culture, to increase the public trust in the research community, to promote the dialogue between the scientific community and the society as well as to create conditions for making scientific knowledge available to policymakers, the RA Science Committee encourages researchers to share the results of their activities in the form of science-popular publications, public interviews, blogs, and in all other available forms not prohibited by law. Toward building sustainable research infrastructures the RA Science Committee intends to launch a process of optimization of the research infrastructures. The process aims at implementing a performance-based funding scheme for institutions and universities to enable a more targeted use of available resources and increase the competitiveness of the research infrastructures. Currently, the mechanisms ensuring the implementation of optimization and performance-based funding scheme are being developed.
Are there any obstacles to achieving SDGs observed in your country that relate to the STI system?
no
If yes, please describe
N/A
Does your country have an overall integrated plan for designing and developing STI policies and practices geared towards achieving the SDGs, such as an STI roadmap for SDGs (this practice is encouraged by the UN)?
no
If yes, please describe and attach
N/A
Is your national STI system designed and managed to support the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals?
yes
If yes, please describe
The national STI system provides necessary conditions to support the achievement of the SDG goals.
What economic, finance and policy tools are available to advance STI geared towards sustainable development and effectively meeting the SDGs?
Targeted use of public funding, upgrading the research infrastructures, increasing the share of private funding, encouraging linkages between science, business and industry, promoting the role of science in society and for society, enhancing international cooperation are the basic tools that advance the national STI to effectively meet the SDGs.
How do international development cooperation policies address the role of STI for global development?
Armenia builds international cooperation frameworks in science and technology to create beneficial conditions for the Armenian research community to integrate into the global research area and contribute to the joint facing of global challenges.
How is international science and research collaboration policy shaped and managed in order to contribute to achieving the SDGs
Collaboration with International partners is built on mutually beneficial terms. Armenia gives priority to those partnerships that contribute to the integration of the Armenian research community into the global research area. The EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation framework program and the upcoming Horizon Europe, as well as the development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation with the EU, CIS and EAEU partnership countries, provide beneficial conditions for the Armenian research community to contribute to achieving the SDGs.
